SCIENCE IS FOR EVERYONE
The diversity, inclusion and equity policy for the Ohio Academy of Science
Last modified 4/2022
It is the Policy of the Ohio Academy of Science to embrace diversity, encourage inclusion and promote equity for all. The OAS rejects racism, sexism, and other systemic inequities within the scientific ecosystem. When these inequities go unaddressed, science as a whole and the OAS in particular are unable to fully benefit from the breadth of expertise of scientists and budding scientists from excluded and historically excluded groups.
- It is our inclusive policy to solicit, value, and respect the contributions of all OAS members, staff, volunteers, and others in all scientific and social environments and recognize the inherent worth and dignity of all. Valuing all perspectives drives innovation
and works to respect, and acknowledge, the intersectionality of identity. From this, historic barriers and contemporary hurdles that have shaped and distorted participation in science can be removed. - Talent and expertise are found in a diverse community of members, staff, volunteers, and those who contribute to the mission and vision of the OAS including but not limited to race, religion, gender, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or
expression, and profession. - Everyone should be treated with equity such that there is an absence of barriers, biases, and obstacles that impede equal access, fair treatment, and opportunity for contribution by all who seek to participate in OAS activities
Diversity, inclusion and equity are vital to ensure all viewpoints, perspectives, and talents are brought to bear in addressing our nation’s critical science and technology challenges and promoting a vibrant scientific community.
