OAS ANNUAL MEETING DESIGN CHALLENGE
The Ohio Academy of Science’s Annual Meeting is for academic, governmental, and industrial scientists and engineers, university and pre-college educators, undergraduate and graduate students, and interested lay citizens in the Ohio region. Annually, the scientific presentations have been complemented by the Keynote Lecture and a Panel Discussion. The 2026 Annual Meeting will be held at The Ohio State University on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24.
For 2026, the OAS Annual Meeting will also feature a design challenge, encouraging students to research challenges facing the data center development in Ohio. Participating teams will compete for $2,000 in total prizes and an opportunity to publish their solution in The Ohio Journal of Science.
DESIGN CHALLENGE INFORMATION
The Ohio Academy of Science invites undergraduate and graduate teams to take on a problem Ohio is living through right now. Data centers are going up across the state faster than the systems around them can comfortably absorb, and the questions that raises are not simple ones. They are technical, environmental, economic, and social all at once, which is exactly why no single discipline can answer them alone.
This challenge asks a team of students to choose one piece of that problem, study it seriously, and propose something better. Teams submit a written report in late September. Three finalist teams are invited to present their work in person at the OAS Annual Meeting in October, in front of the Meeting audience and a panel of invited judges, and all three are invited to publish in The Ohio Journal of Science.
As artificial intelligence technology advances, the computing infrastructure behind AI has to live somewhere physical, and increasingly that somewhere is Ohio. Central Ohio in particular now hosts one of the densest concentrations of data center development in the country, with more announced nearly every quarter.
A facility of this kind is an enormous, continuous consumer of electricity. It runs at full load every hour of every day, which makes its demands on the grid different in kind from a factory or an office park. Keeping the equipment inside from overheating requires either large volumes of water or a great deal of additional energy, and choosing between those two is a real engineering decision with real consequences either way. The buildings occupy substantial land, often farmland, and they change the character of the places that host them. They bring investment and construction jobs, though far fewer permanent positions than their footprint might suggest. Meanwhile utilities, regulators, and local governments are writing the rules governing all of this in something close to real time.
None of these tensions has a settled answer. That is what makes the problem worth handing to students rather than simply describing to them. The decisions Ohio makes about this infrastructure over the next few years will shape the state for decades, and the people who will live with those decisions longest are the ones still in school.
What Your Team Will Do
Start by choosing a focus area and framing a specific, well-defined problem within it. Framing matters more than most teams expect. A submission that tries to solve everything about data centers will do less well than one that identifies a genuine, bounded problem and treats it with real rigor.
From there, design a solution and defend it across four dimensions. Every submission must address all four, and each is scored on its own.
The first is the scientific foundation: the physics, chemistry, biology, or environmental science that actually governs the problem you have chosen. The second is applied science and engineering, meaning the translation of those principles into a technical approach and a coherent system design. The third is supply chain and logistics, which is where a good idea meets the practical question of whether it can be built, sourced, staffed, and kept running continuously. The fourth is environmental and sustainability analysis: ecological impact, resource use, emissions, effects on the surrounding community, and whether the solution still makes sense in twenty years.
Teams that do well tend to be honest about tradeoffs rather than presenting a solution as costless. Nearly every choice available here improves one thing at the expense of another, and judges are looking for evidence that you understand which levers you are pulling and what they cost.
The deliverable is a written report of up to ten pages, including a system diagram and a stakeholder map identifying who is affected by your proposal and how. The work must be your team’s own. You may build on your own prior work, including a course project or capstone, as long as you cite it clearly, and you may use generative AI tools provided you disclose that use and take full responsibility for the accuracy of everything you submit.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Choose one focus area: power and grid integration, cooling and water, air quality and noise, land use and community, cybersecurity, or supply chain and economic impact. Frame a specific problem within it, then design a solution and defend it across four dimensions: the underlying science, the engineering, the practical logistics of building and running it, and the environmental and community impact.
Every team designs for the same place, the New Albany International Business Park, working from a shared set of sourced baseline parameters. That keeps submissions comparable and lets judges evaluate the quality of your thinking rather than the luck of your research. A few parameters, cooling approach most of all, are deliberately left open for your team to decide and defend.
The deliverable is a report of up to ten pages including a system diagram and a stakeholder map. Full requirements are in the briefing packet.
Eligibility
Teams of 4 to 6 students, undergraduate or graduate or a mix of both. Any major, any institution, in or out of Ohio, and teams may include members from more than one school. A faculty advisor is welcome but not required.
Entry is $50 per team, paid at submission. It includes complimentary Friday admission to the OAS Annual Meeting for every student team member, whether or not the team advances.
Judging
Every report is scored on ten published criteria by OAS judges. The score card is available alongside the briefing packet, so you can see exactly what judges are looking for before you start writing. Three finalists are then selected to present live at the Annual Meeting, where invited judges choose first, second, and third place.
Prizes and Recognition
All three finalist teams win. $1,000 for first place, $500 each for second and third, split evenly among team members.
All three are also invited to publish in The Ohio Journal of Science, the Academy’s peer-reviewed journal.
