1 Appoint Science Policy Advisory Committee – completed; policy survey published in September 2002 The Ohio Journal of Science ; continue; expand work to be more proactive and strategic, especially in the areas of biotechnology, education reform, the environment, science & technology based economic development and workforce issues vis a vis the Ohio economy, and personal and public health related issues. Target, specifically, the science education curriculum issue and its supporters in the contexts of scientific integrity, loss of support or climate for intellectual activities and potential loss of opportunities for technical employment in Ohio

2 Create Academy Web Page – completed in 1997; continuous improvement needed.

2 Establish Student Advisory Council – completed; needs renewal; continue.

2 Expand Ohio Scientific Work Program for Teachers (SWEPT) Program – no action; drop idea for now.

2 Link with other groups – continuous improvement and expansion; develop strong coalitions, especially for science policy and programming matters.

2 Update EXEMPLARS: Women in Science Roster – no action; drop idea.

 

Third order strategies

3 Expand Media Relations – continuous improvement; expand, especially in efforts to inform the public about Ohio’s achievements in science, engineering and technology.

3 Hold Undergraduate Research Forum – completed; undergraduate papers now an integral part of the Annual Meeting; conduct outreach to new campuses, especially Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, the University of Dayton, and the University of Cincinnati.

3 Foster Team-based Learning – continuous improvement; expand team awards at State Science Day.

3 Appoint Journal Advisory & Outreach Committee – no action; appoint after new editor is selected.

3 Publish "White Paper" on Team Approaches – no action; drop idea.

3 Expand Student Recognition by Public Officials – continuous improvement; 400-500 responses per year; continue.

4 Publish Ohio's Weather Story book – on hold; change to CR-ROM/web-based project.

4 Improve Student Research Opportunities – no specific action taken; promote model student mentorship programs.

Seventh order strategies

7 Publish "What is Science?" brochure – Approved on April 16, 2004 by the Board of Trustees. Trustees directed that a more comprehensive article be developed and published in The Ohio Journal of Science.

7 Establish Student Mentorships & Internships – only action was to refine science day standards to promote mentorships for all students; identify and publicize successful, model programs as session(s) at annual meeting, or as an August, pre-school workshop to be jointly sponsored by the Parent and Student Advisory Councils.

8 Use Retirees as Mentors and Classroom Speakers – no action; drop idea.
